Tennis Italy and Jannik Sinner can set more records
2024 è was an unprecedented year in the history of Italian tennis but still lacks the Davis Cup to try to put a further seal on a triumphant season for both the men's and women's movement.
In Malaga, Italy led by Jannik Sinner faces Argentina in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup Finals. The’opportunity è too good for the world number 1 and his teammates to end the year in the best of all worlds.
But who hit the Billie Jean King Cup – Davis Cup and ATP Finals – Davis Cup pairings. The answer was given on the Supertennis website by Luca Marianantoni, the top expert on statistics applied to sports in Italy, particularly those related to tennis.
There are five players who have won the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup in the same year: Stan Smith in 1970, then John McEnroe in 1978, Boris Becker in 1988, Andre Agassi in 1990 and Michael Stich in 1993.
Jannik Sinner could thus join this club after 31 years during which he has not acquired any new members and of which not a single one of the big three, namely Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, is a member.
Instead, the women’s Italy yesterday took home the Billie Jean King Cup for the fifth time in its history, but the men’s Davis Cup never managed to imitate the girls in the same year. Only four nations have succeeded: the United States 7 times (1963, 1969, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1990), Australia 3 times (1964, 1965 and 1973), Czech Republic (in 2012) and Russia (in 2021) once.
But there’è a record that belongs to no one and that Sinner could be the first to set: winning the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup in the same year and ending the said year at No. 1 in the world. These days we will know whether this record will be set and the other two equaled.
