Jannik Sinner and Italy, mission accomplished: Davis Cup still blue
Blue triumph arrives, for the third time in history.
Jannik Sinner wins again, and this time he does it in the name of Italy. È in fact of the formidable Alto Adige the final signature on the Davis Cup success, the second in a row for Italian tennis, achieved thanks to a two-set victory over Tallon Griekspoor. It ends 7-6(2), 6-2 for the San Candido champion, who thus concludes in the best way his already magical 2024. And the Azzurri celebrate their third success in the competition, after 1976 and precisely 2023.
The mission against Griekspoor turns out to be less smooth than expected for Sinner. In fact, the first set lasted almost an hour, due to the resilience of the Dutchman who was able to maintain the balance until the tie-break without conceding a single break ball to Sinner. The azure then manages to build an important lead up to 4-1, enough to control operations leading to set point.
Quite different the trend of the second set, which lasted just over 40 minutes and saw three consecutive breaks between the third and fifth games. At that point però only crumbs remained for a Griekspoor who gave up hard and lost four games in a row against a Sinner once again unstoppable.
Earlier in the day it was Matteo Berrettini who put Italy ahead in the Davis Cup final against Holland. No chance for Botic Van de Zandschulp, defeated with a final score of 6-4, 6-2 after an hour and a quarter of play by the Roman, back at the highest level after difficulties in recent years.
