Romelu Lukaku knocks out Roma and returns top spot to Napoli
The great former signs the victory that is worth the lone top of the standings.
Napoli topped Serie A alone thanks to a narrow victory at the Maradona Stadium against Roma. To sign it the most awaited and feared former: Romelu Lukaku, author of the decisive 1-0 at 54'. With this result, Antonio Conte’s team reabsorbs at once Inter, Atalanta and Fiorentina, overtaking them all by one point: 29 to 28.
Napoli showed it wanted to win the big match from the very first minutes: this was confirmed by Kvaratskhelia's bad mistake under goal already at 2' and the chances built in the next ten minutes by McTominay and Politano. Roma però did not just watch and made themselves dangerous on the other side with Pisilli. McTominay again scares the Giallorossi twice, who però get away with it. And in the final half è even El Shaarawy to save everything on Kvaratskhelia.
At the beginning of the second half Ranieri throws Hummels and Baldanzi into the fray, but almost only Napoli continues to be seen on the field. Lukaku starts to warm up, but his header è inaccurate. It gets better when at 54' Di Lorenzo comes forward on the right and crosses into the box, where the Belgian anticipates in his own slip Hummels and pierces Svilar. Baldanzi lifts his aim on the ball of the possible equalizer, then Roma also eats its hands for a crossbar hit by Dovbyk.
Napoli therefore still certain to lead the Serie A standings alone, despite a very compact pack of pursuers barely a point apart. Roma, on the other hand, is getting further and further away from the top: the new defeat leaves the Giallorossi on 13 points, a good 16 less than the confirmed leader.
