Mourning in sports journalism: è died Gian Paolo Ormezzano

Sports journalism mourns the passing of Gian Paolo Ormezzano, an emblematic figure in Italian sports and cultural reporting. Already editor of Tuttosport from 1974 to 1979, a prestigious signature of La Stampa until his retirement in 1991 – a retirement more formal than real, given his constant activity of collaboration – he also left an indelible mark on magazines such as Guerin Sportivo and Famiglia Cristiana. He's passed away at the age of 89.

In his long and multifaceted career, Ormezzano è was a witness to some of the major sporting and historical events of the 20th century. He has chronicled the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the historic landing on the moon as an envoy to Cape Canaveral in 1969, the tragic terrorist attack on the 1972 Munich Games and the world triumph of Enzo Bearzot’s national team in 1982. His pen was able to combine the lucidity of the reporter with the visceral passion of the fan, especially for Torino, the team of the heart that he never stopped loving.

Ormezzano è was not only a journalist: he è was also a popular television commentator and author of novels and essays. His works include Giro d’Italia con delitto and La fine del campione, as well as the three volumes Storia del ciclismo (which won him the Bancarella Sport prize), Storia dell’atletica and Storia del calcio. His literary contribution has been able to go beyond sports, offering a unique human and cultural perspective.

To his wife and three children go the affectionate thoughts of those who esteemed and admired him. His voice and pen will continue to be an example and a memory for all.
