Jannik Sinner-Alex de Minaur, one-way precedents

The Australian Open quarterfinal between Jannik Sinner and Alex de Minaur, which will be staged on Wednesday morning, Jan. 22, in Melbourne, will be the 10th straight clash between the current world No. 1 and the 25-year-old from Sydney, who will be seeking the support of the home crowd to dispel a real tab.

In fact, in the nine previous matches, Jannik Sinner è always came out the winner: the first meeting was at the Next Gen Finals in 2019, when the South Tyrolean won the tournament by beating De Minaur himself 4-2, 4-1, 4-2 (at the Next Gen Finals they play with a different scoring system to win the set), the last one was the 6-3, 6-4 with which Sinner gave Italy the winning point against Australia in the Davis Cup semifinals in Malaga in November 2024.

In between there'è only one precedent at Slam level, also at the Australian Open: in 2022 Sinner met De Minaur in the round of 16, winning 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4. The two were, moreover, supposed to meet in the third round of the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 in 2023, but Sinner had to forfeit the match due to physical problems.

Jannik Sinner is looking at the Australian Open for his second consecutive victory, following his 2024 triumph. In the first rounds of this year&#39s tournament, he defeated, in sequence, Nicolas Jarry 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-1, Tristan Schoolkate 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3, Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 and Holger Rune by the score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
