Australian Open: Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli rematched and defeated in the final

Once again the Slam dream for Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli fades on the nicest of terms. The Italian pair, in fact, è was defeated in a comeback in the Australian Open final by the duo formed by Britain’s Harri Heliovaara and Finland’s Henry Patten with the score of 6-7 7-6 6-3, after more than three hours of play.

The match started in the best way for the two Italians, who found the break already in the opening game. In the ninth game, the Italians reach set point, but the referee, after a careful video review, awarded the point to Heliovaara and Patten because of a court invasion committed by Vavassori. The Englishman and the Finn, at that point, take advantage of this moment of confusion to recover the break disadvantage and earn three chances to close out the set. The blue pair, however, did not tremble and first saved and then won a tight tie-break with a score of 18-16.

In the second set, the mostù total balance reigns and all four players manage to keep their respective turnovers. The match again goes to the tie-break, but this time it is Heliovaara and Patten who are more cynical in the climaxes, winning the partial set by the score of 7 points to 5.

In the third and decisive set, Vavassori and Bolelli were mentally affected by the lost tie-break, and the opposing pair immediately took advantage of it to post a partial three-game winning streak. The Italian duo tried to fight back, but Heliovaara and Patten were adept at maintaining the break lead until the final 6-3, which gave them their second Slam title after the one they won at Wimbledon 2024.

They have yet to postpone their appointment with their first Slam title, however, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, who have lost three out of three finals.
