Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini win women’s doubles in Doha

On an uneventful day for Italian tennis, it took Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini to bring a huge smile to all fans: the pair of gold medalists at Paris 2024 triumphed in the women’s doubles final of the WTA tournament in Doha, Qatar. The final act rewarded the two Italian champions after two sets against Jiang Sinyu of China and Wu Fang-Hsien of Taiwan, 7-5, 7-6(12).

The challenge è was anything but easy for the Bolognese veteran and the number 4 in the world rankings at the singles level: in the first set, in fact, they found themselves twice down by two games, first on 1-3 and then on 3-5, managing, however, to cancel two set points before completing the comeback and winning the fraction in the twelfth game.

Similar script also in the second set, when on 3-5 Errani and Paolini regained control of the situation, taking the fraction to the tie-break and winning it 12-10, wasting four match points before closing but also saving themselves on a set ball available to the Asian athletes on 8-9.

The one won on Saturday è thus the sixth tournament won by the pair formed by Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, by now a certainty when it comes to playing doubles: between October 2023 and today they have in fact won in Monastir and Linz on cement, in Rome and at the Olympic Games on clay, before returning to win on the hard surface in Beijing and Doha.
