Matteo Berrettini returns as “Hammer” and hits the quarterfinals at the Miami Open, the second Masters 1000 of the season. He will play them for the fourth time in a Masters 1000 after Shanghai 2019, Rome 2020 and Madrid 2021.

He completed against Alex De Minaur, world number 11, his first win over a Top 20 in a Masters 1000 or Slam just since’his last win over de Minaur at Wimbledon 2023. He closed 63 76(7) after a match that was anything but linear.

Berrettini won the first set without particular difficulty and got the break in the opening set in the second as well. De Minaur, however, climbs back up and makes a comeback. Berrettini saves three set points in a row from 0-40 at 4-5, then places the break and goes to serve to close the match. He doesn&#8217t convert three match points: on the first he wins the match point, then come a couple of errors by the Italian. At the tie-break Berrettini goes down 3-6, the Australian on the most beautiful does not close, Matteo does and releases all his joy at the fifth opportunity. These are the statistics of the match that propels him to the quarterfinals in Florida.
