Sixth world gold in speed skiing for Valentina Greggio

Valentina Greggio is back on the rainbow throne, Simone Origone is bronze: the Azzurri continue to be protagonists on the world stage.
The final challenge of the World Speed Skiing Championships crowned the Azzurra, who triumphed on the track in Vars, France, going 225.73 kilometers per hour to beat Sweden’s Agnes Abrahamsson (218.42 km/h) and host Clea Martinez, third with 216.85 km/h. A triumph that comes at the end of a dominated World Championships, with the Piedmontese constantly ahead of everyone, round after round.
Greggio thus confirms 12 months later the rainbow title captured on the same track in March 2024, at the end of a winter that saw her undefeated and dominating the World Cup.
Simone Origone, in turn, climbs the rainbow podium thanks to third place: the Valdostan touches the speed of 227.24 kilometers per hour and is preceded by host Simon Billy, capable of reaching 229.13 km/h, and by Austrian Manuel Kramer, who grows in laps at the most opportune time for him and is silver with 228.45 km/h.
Behind Origone in fourth place is Finland’s Jukka Viitasaari (226.88 km/h) with New Zealand’s Tawny Wagstaff fifth with 226.77 km/h and Czech Radim Palan sixth with 225.87 km/h. Like Valentina, Simone was also able to win the World Cup in speed skiing this winter.
“I know that if I don’t make mistakes among the women I am the best. Yet I’m not completely satisfied with my speed, I was hoping to be able to do a better lap, but the performance is there – said Valentina Greggio -. Of course, I always chase the maximum performance and, so not being able to express it to the maximum gives me a bit of discomfort, even with the gold medal around my neck.
By the way, today the track conditions were at the limit: the snow was very soft, they changed the starting point several times, and there were a lot of waves, especially in the upper part. I really “danced” a lot on the slope. In season I tore up everything, I improved from past years, and I’m really sorry I couldn’t even try the record because of the slope. I’ve been at the top for two years already, but we can’t make the record attempts, and that’s a real shame. I hope to at least be able to try soon.”
“I made a mistake – admitted Origone, bronze medalist -. I made two changes of direction, first to the right and then to the left, and goodbye speed. In this sport, you have to go straight.”
