Fabio Fognini, winner of this tournament in 2019, a success that is also his last on the ATP major circuit, and currently world number 113, was swept in the first round of the Masters 1000 on the Monte Carlo clay in just over an hour by Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo with a score of 6-0 6-3.

The first set is dominated by Cerundolo, as the score suggests. Fognini, in his 14th paticipation in this tournament three years after the last, scraped together 11 points in the entire partial by missing a game ball at 0-2 and two consecutive break points at 0-3.

The 37-year-old Arroyo Arroyo player, who had a break point in the first set, was the first to win.

The 37-year-old from Arma di Taggia held his own in the second set until 2-2, then lost his serve for the fourth time and finally on 5-3 suffered the fifth break of the match and finally left the way clear for his opponent, who will now face world number 3 Carlos Alcaraz in the second round.
