Matteo Berrettini knocks out Zverev and does Jannik Sinner a big favor

Thanks to a super performance, Matteo Berrettini overcame Alexander Zverev with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours and 28 minutes of play. The Roman champion thus advanced to the round of 16 of the Atp of Monte-Carlo’Atp of Monte-Carlo.

Great news also for Jannik Sinner, who thanks to Zverev’s knockout is certain to return to the court in Rome as world No. 1. The South Tyrolean, thanks to Berrettini’s help, has secured at least 14 more days at the top of the rankings.

In the three sets of the challenge between Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev we witnessed moments of great tennis: in the first one the German was dominant to the Roman champion accused the opponent&#8217s strokes. The second set started like the first but Berrettini, between the third and sixth games, inserted the right gear and changed the’inertia of the challenge.

The third set was pure struggle between the two great champions but Berrettini prevailed partly thanks to an athletically dazzling form, clearly superior to his opponent&#8217s. With this victory Berrettini became the first Italian to beat a top 2 on clay since Lorenzo Musetti in 2023.
