Elisabetta Cocciaretto advances to the final qualifying round of the Madrid WTA, the third 1000 tournament of the season as far as the women’s circuit is concerned. The 24-year-old from Porto San Giorgio defeated Priscilla Hon with a clear 6-2, 6-1, at the end of a match that lasted just 69′. The difference between the two, also separated by 53 positions in the world rankings (Cocciaretto is No. 89, Hon No. 142), is evident.

Awaiting the Italian tennis player, class of 2001, in the round that will give access to the main draw, will be Frenchwoman Diane Parry, a year younger, who defeated Russian Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 7-5 in the first round. Between Cocciaretto and Parry there is only one previous match, dating back to the 2019 Santa Margherita di Pula tournament: it was the Marche player who won, 6-1, 6-3.

The adventure of Sara Errani, No. 152 WTA, defeated by Australia&#8217s Maya Joint, stopped instead at the first hurdle of the qualifiers: the 19-year-old, No. 78 in the rankings, won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 after an hour and fifty-one minutes of play and will go on to face in the final round Swiss Jil Teichmann, who defeated Belgium&#8217s Yanina Wickmayer 6-1, 6-2.

The Madrid Open, in its women’s declination, has been played since 2009 and was part of the WTA Premier circuit until 2019, before reclassification to a WTA 1000 tournament in 2021. The defending champion is Iga Swiatek, who defeated Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in the 2024 final. The two were also finalists in 2023, but prevailing on that occasion was the Belarusian.
