Carlo Calcagni is ready for a new challenge
From April 23 to 27, Marrakesh hosts the International Grand Prix of Morocco, which brings together the best Paralympic athletes on the planet. Representing Italy will be Carlo Calcagni, Colonel of the Army Honor Roll, world champion and record holder in the 100 and 400 meters category T72, on the strength of the Defense Paralympic Sports Group. Calcagni will be on the track April 24 for the 100 meters and April 26 for the 400, aiming to break his own records. “The real challenge is with yourself – he explains – . I don’t run to beat others, but to surpass my own limits every day. To prove that nothing is impossible, even when your body is a trench and your life a daily war.”
In 1996, while on a peacekeeping mission in the Balkans, Carlo was contaminated with heavy metals and depleted uranium. Since then he has undergone transplants, septicemia, cardiac arrests, more than 300,000 rounds of therapy. The pain is constant, but he does not give up, ever.
“It is not my medical records that define me, but what I do every day. I live, I breathe, I train, I fight. Every step on the track is a declaration of love to life,” Calcagni adds
