Madrid Masters 1000, Fabio Fognini already out in the first round

Fabio Fognini leaves the Madrid ATP Masters 1000 tournament after just an hour and a handful of minutes. That was the duration of his match against Serbian Laslo Djere in the first round of the event, which ended 6-2, 6-3 in favor of the number 71 on the international circuit at the end of two sets and after just about seventy minutes of play.
For Fognini it turned out to be a nightmare particularly the first set, in which he ceded service to Djere as early as the fourth game. The Serb concedes only one point to the blue in each of his three turns at bat, while attacking the Ligurian in the hunt for the second break in the sixth game, in vain, and in the eighth finding the decisive 6-2 after less than half an hour.
Fognini grows in the second set, but it is not enough: this time he gets the break after an endless first game, but gives it back to Djere already during the next game. This time, too, the Serb finds a new break, which gives him 3-1, and he could close in the’eighth game. The Azure held on, and cancelled two match points but had to surrender during the next game.
The participation in the Madrid Masters 1000 had come for Fognini thanks to the victory in the final round of the qualifying tournament against Australian Rinky Hijikata. His return to the main draw of the Spanish capital’s tournament three years after his last participation, however, ended as early as the following day.
