Lorenzo Musetti on the hunt for another record in Madrid

Lorenzo Musetti will join Jannik Sinner in the Top 10 starting Monday. Today, meanwhile, in Madrid, in the semifinals against Britain’s Jack Draper, he is aiming to equal another record for the South Tyrolean and become the second Italian with at least two finals to his credit in Masters 1000s since 1990, when these tournaments were introduced on the calendar.
Already a finalist in Monte-Carlo this year, Musetti could become the first Italian with at least two finals played in Masters 1000 on clay. Moreover, since the Mutua Madrid Open has been played on clay, only Rafa Nadal has managed to reach the final in both Monte-Carlo and the Caja Magica in the same season (2009-11, 2013 and 2017). Overall, since 1990, only Andrei Medvedev (1994), Marcelo Rios (1999), Gustavo Kuerten (2001), Guillermo Coria (2005), and Roger Federer (2006) have reached the final in the first two Masters 1000s on red clay in season.
His task will not be easy. Draper, who as of Monday will become the 16th Top 5 left-hander in the ATP rankings since 1973, has won all five of his direct confrontations, the first two on grass as a junior, the last three on hard court on the ATP circuit.
Champion this year at Indian Wells, Draper will play his first ATP Tour semifinal on clay. By beating Musetti, the Briton will be the third player born in the 2000s to reach a Masters 1000 final on both clay and concrete.
On his side, Musetti can call on a record of 18 wins and 3 losses on clay since July. The Carrara native, an Olympic bronze medalist in Paris last summer, is currently world No. 8 according to real-time ATP ranking projections and could rise to the No. 7 position by overcoming de Minaur with a win in the semifinals. He has an 11-26 record against Top 10 players (3-2 in 2025). He is chasing his seventh ATP final (2-4 record), his second in a Masters 1000.
Draper, who has won 22 of his last 24 matches against opponents outside the Top 10 at the time of the match. is also aiming for his seventh ATP final (record 3-3), his second at the Masters 1000 level (after Indian Wells 2025). Should he succeed, he would become the second Briton after Andy Murray capable of reaching Masters 1000 finals on both clay and concrete.
