Fabio Fognini ready to close the loop: clear announcement on his own future

That of 2025 will be the ’last Masters 1000 in Rome for Fabio Fognini. Announcing this, at the microphones of ‘Sky Sport‘, was the veteran racket player himself, who on Thursday, May 8, will be engaged in the first round of the Internazionali d’Italia against Britain’s Jacob Fearnley, class of 2001. Since 2009, Fognini has always been in the main draw in Rome, reaching as his best result the quarters in 2018.
“I want to give space to young people, as it’s right to do – said the 37-year-old former No. 9 ranking -I had a beautiful career, I am super happy, and as in all things there’s a beginning and an end”. In case of success against Fearnley, Fognini would face Matteo Berrettini, already in the second round being among the top 32 seeds.
Winner of 9 titles in singles and 8 in doubles as far as the major circuit is concerned, Fabio Fognini is looking in Rome for the tail end of a career that peaked in the second half of the last decade, with the doubles success at the 2015 Australian Open paired with Simone Bolelli and the singles success in Monte Carlo in 2019, icing on the cake.
In Rome, Fognini especially shined in the 2018 edition, beating Gael Monfils, Dominic Thiem and Peter Gojowczyk in succession, before surrendering in three sets to Rafa Nadal, in a match in which the Ligurian tennis player had managed to win the first set before surrendering to the legendary champion from Manacor.
