Alexander Sorloth: four goals that rewrite history

An almost unprecedented feat: almost, because it had already been accomplished once in history. But even before World War II ended. The man who rewrote the almanacs of soccer is Alexander Sorloth, authentic matador of Atletico Madrid–Real Sociedad. In fact, the match ended 4-0 for the hosts, but with the Norwegian striker scoring all four goals, and doing so during the first half-hour of play.

The former Villarreal man, who arrived at Atletico Madrid during the 2024 summer market, unlocked the score on 7′, then repeated himself on 10′, 11’11’ and precisely on 30′ minute of the match. This brought his tally to 17 goals scored in the first La Liga he played in the Colchoneros jersey.

Only once has Spain’s top league seen one of its protagonists score four goals in just half an hour: Mundo scored them as far back as 1941, interestingly even then against Real Sociedad.

Sorloth’s magical day is reminiscent of several others, including the very recent one by Mateo Retegui in the’current Serie A with the jersey of Atalanta against Verona. Famous in our league even two fives (Roberto Pruzzo in 1986 in Roma-Avellino and Miroslav Klose in Lazio-Bologna in 2012/13), while unattainable remains that of Robert Lewandowski. The Pole (who in his Borussia Dortmund days scored four goals at none other than Real Madrid) even took nine minutes to drop the pokerissimo against Wolfsburg in 2015.
