Giro 2025: Van Aert wins in Siena, Del Toro wears pink. Complicated day for Roglic

Wout van Aert finds in Siena (where he had already won the Strade Bianche in 2020) his first overall victory at the Giro d’Italia. in the ninth stage of the Corsa Rosa, the Belgian rider from Team Visma-Lease a Bike beat Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) in a two-man sprint, who in turn can rejoice, however, in winning the pink jersey.
The winning action of the two escapees led them to the finish line in Piazza del Campo with 58″ over Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), who was third at the finish line at the head of the chasing group that also included Richard Carapaz (EF Education-Easypost), Simon Yates (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) and Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious), the latter now third in the overall, 1’30” from Del Toro.
Slightly further behind is Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), who comes in at 1’07” (the Spaniard is second in the overall standings at 1’13” from his teammate), but the real disappointment of the day, partly because he was plagued by bad luck, is Primoz Roglic: the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider was first involved in a crash, then forced to change bikes after a puncture on the long stretch of gravel road. The Slovenian tried to limit the damage in the finale, but came to the finish 2’22” from the stage winner.
The pink dream fades after just 24 hours for Diego Ulissi: the veteran of the’XDS Astana Team has in fact suffered the roughness of the long route that took the riders from Gubbio to Siena, and in the next stage he will return to wear the uniform of his team, leaving the symbol of primacy to Del Toro. Monday’s rest day, Tuesday’s 28.6-kilometer time trial from Lucca to Pisa, which could further shuffle the cards.
