All the Scudetto combinations: playoff hypothesis still valid

Just one day before the end of the championship, the verdict has not yet been delivered. Pedro’s double at San Siro, at the same time as Parma’s resistance at the Tardini, have left the standings unchanged: Napoli at +1 over Inter’s but with one round less on the calendar. It will all be decided on the’last day. These are all the possible combinations in what is an exciting Scudetto sprint.

The first certainty is that Count’s team is master of its own destiny. If the Azzurri beat, at the Maradona, Cagliari, they will be champions of Italy without reckoning with Inter’s result in Como. In case of a draw or defeat with the Sardinians (already mathematically safe), Napoli would need a defeat of the Nerazzurri with the Larians.

More delicate situation for Inter, which, after seeing its overtaking in the standings against the Neapolitans slip away in the last minutes of the challenge with Lazio, is forced to win and hope for comforting news from Naples. The Nerazzurri must beat Como and hope that Napoli fails to win with Cagliari. With a draw or a defeat of both, Napoli would be Campione d’Italia.

Beware also of the playoff hypothesis. If Napoli were to lose its home match against Cagliari and Inter were to draw on the Como field, the two teams would end on equal points (79) and, as a result, a play-off would be necessary to determine the new Champion of Italy team. The only Scudetto playoff in Serie A history dates back to the 1963/64 season (won by Bologna against Inter’Inter).
