Napoli’s scudetto numbers: it has the best defense in'Europe

An iron defense, the most armored in Europe, and an attack that lacked a real bomber but was able to count on multiple mouths of fire. It is in the numbers one of the secrets that led Conte’s team to win the fourth Scudetto in its history. When Conte arrived, he started again from a Napoli team that was back from a bad year, tenth in the standings, with 48 goals conceded, the second worst defense among the top 11 in Serie A, and an attack that had scored only 55 goals.
The arrival of Buongiorno from Torino served to put the lock on the defense. That of Lukaku, in the last days of the market, to give Osimhen’s orphaned attack the weight it lacked. The arrivals of three bets like McTominay and Gilmour from the Premier League and Neres from Benfica completed the picture.
The final result speaks of a team that conceded 27 goals in 38 matches, the best defense in Serie A, superior even to that of the other leagues going for the most: Liverpool took 40, Barcelona 39, Bayern Munich 32 and PSG 35. If the defense has been the pivot on which to build success, the attack has also played its part though without matching the same numbers. Lukaku secured 14 goals, 8 of which unlocked the result in as many matches.
Alongside him was the real surprise of the league, that McTominay, playing as a midfielder, who with his 12 goals was the added striker. Decisive were his goals in the 1-1 draw against Inter in Milan, and in the season finale. Not bad for someone who in his six years played at Manchester United had scored a total of 19 goals.
The Scotsman’s 12 goals and Lukaku’s 14 make 26, as many as Osimhen had scored two years ago in Spalletti’s Scudetto, when there was, however, Kvaratskhelia who had scored 12 and Napoli triumphed with a beauty of 77 goals scored. More than 20 more than the 59 scored this year’s new low for the championship team in 20-team leagues.
For Conte, it was the sixth Scudetto in his coaching career and resembles the one achieved at Chelsea in 2017 when the coach took the bench of the Blues who had finished 10th, leading them immediately to win the championship, just as he did at Napoli.
