European Open Water Championships, Gregorio Paltrinieri fifth in the 3 km knockout

Gregorio Paltrinieri finished fifth in the 3-kilometer knockout at the European Open Water Swimming Championships, underway in Stari Grad, Croatia.
After his gold in the 5 km and fourth place in the 10 km last Wednesday, the Italian champion shone less brightly in the event that features a special format: three segments of 1,500, 1,000 and 500 meters, at the last of which only the ten best are allowed to chase the podium.
Italy also fielded Davide Marchello and Matteo Diodato, in addition to Paltrinieri, who was fastest in the first leg and also in the second.
Along with the other two Azzurri he competed in the ‘final’, where, however, it was Hungary’s Kristof Rasovszky, Olympic champion and already gold in the 10 km at these European Championships, who stood out with a time of 5:04.04. Behind him was France’s Logan Fontaine, silver, and another Magyar, David Betlehem.
Paltrinieri touched with a delay of 2”09, while Marchello and Diodato, finished ninth and tenth, respectively.
