After nine years full of success, excitement and growth, Gian Piero Gasperini officially leaves Atalanta. The Bergamo-based club paid tribute to its coach with a touching message of thanks in an official note, describing the relationship with the coach as “a wonderful story, more unique than rare in the world of soccer.”

Who arrived in 2016, Gasperini revolutionized Atalanta, making it a solid reality in Italian and European soccer. Under his leadership, La Dea has achieved goals unthinkable until a few years ago: the first historic Champions League qualification in 2019/20 and, most importantly, winning the Europa League in 2024, beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final. The latest masterpiece is the third place in Serie A, with the team qualifying again for the top continental competition.

Gasperini explained his decision this way, “The conclusion of my relationship with the club was solely decided by me. I understood that the time had come to take this step. I leave Atalanta at the highest possible point.” Words that testify to the gratitude and professionalism with which he handled his own farewell, dictated by the need to face new challenges.

The club, in its statement, reiterated its deep esteem for the coach: “Dearest Mister, ours has been a wonderful story. More unique than rare in the world of soccer. Nine exceptional and intense years in which we achieved extraordinary results in Italy and Europe.”

The Bergamo club continues, “A page, indeed a great chapter that will remain indelible in the history of Atalanta. The relationship of (deep) affection and (sincere) esteem that has bound us and will still bind us, regardless of the fact that our respective professional paths now part. We cannot thank you enough for the emotions you have given us and for the joys that together we have managed to bring to Bergamo and our fans, going beyond the imaginable. After so many years spent together, we felt it was our duty to respect your desire to seek new stimuli, knowing full well that our relationship will never be interrupted and that our mutual esteem will never diminish. Again and forever THANK YOU, Mister!!! The whole Atalanta family.”

Now, a new adventure looms on the horizon: Gasperini is one step away from Roma, where only officialdom is awaited. A new chapter in an already rich career, as one of the most glorious eras in Atalanta’s history comes to a close in Bergamo.
