Spalletti: "I do not know what mistakes I made, convinced that Italy will go to the World Cup"

Luciano Spalletti, in his final hours as technical commissioner of the national team, spoke to RAI microphones the day after the announcement of his dismissal as technical commissioner and a few hours before the Azzurri’s match against Moldova, valid for the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
“L’annuncio? I go to the press conference because I had to go there in the pre-match. If someone from the Federation wanted to come with me, he could come… But it was all done in friendship and transparency. Why would we have told two more days of lies? I would have continued with these players as I said after the knockout against Norway”.
“It is not a result that determines my career – he assured -If I have messed up in my career, it is because someone in my place did not do it’he said. This time nobody had to mess up. This time I made mistakes, but I don’t know which ones. I believed in these players I chose and I continue to do so. Those who come after me I hope will do much better than me and go to the World Cup. But if I stayed, it was because I believed I would go to the World Cup. There’s been a bad result in Norway, but there’s plenty of time to make up for it or do it in the playoffs” continued the Tuscan coach.
Spalletti says he“s super convinced that Italy will go to the World Cup. Ranieri the’right man? I don’t know, but he’s a professional who has been around the world, he’s balanced, and with Roma as a sub, he knew how to touch the right buttons with the players. The Federation will choose the right person. I am not made like many others, I assure you: I will be rooting for him”.
