European Under-21s, Pisilli lights up but not enough: draw with Spain

Italy Under 21 closes with a 1-1 draw against Spain in the last match of Group A of the European Championship category. A high-intensity challenge was staged in Trnava, fought until the last ball and embellished by Giacomo Pisilli’s technical masterpiece, but the result was not enough for the Azzurrini to win the first place: the Spanish won, thanks to a better goal difference.
The match opened with high pace and a decidedly lively Italy, despite the ten changes made by coach Carmine Nunziata compared to the lineup that had overwhelmed Slovakia. Among the most inspired, Fazzini tried to surprise Cunat with a broadside from outside the box, while Pisilli and Kayode combined well, creating another good chance. The Iberians, also reshuffled, responded with a proactive attitude but the Azzurri held up with order and personality.
The first half ends at 0-0, but the resumption immediately gives emotions. In the 53rd minute, Jesus Rodriguez, one of Betis’ most pursued talents, took advantage of an Azzurri defensive blunder and put the Roja ahead with a percussive strike. The Italian reaction, however, was immediate, and in the 59th minute Pisilli signed a goal to applause: perfect stop on a long throw, sharp dribbling and a powerful right at the second post. A feat that is worth the equalizer and confirms the Roma midfielder among the best of the tournament.
Despite Nunziata’s offensive changes and a couple of chances in the final, Italy failed to find the winning goal. The match ends 1-1 and, due to goal difference, it is Spain that ends up leading the group. The Azzurrini, second, will face one of England or Germany in the quarters
