Club World Cup: Inter in the round of 16 if… all combinations

With the hard-fought victory against the Urawa Red Diamonds and the draw between River Plate and Monterrey, Inter Milan have moved up to first place in Group E of the Club World Cup, tied with the Argentine club on 4 points, while the Mexicans are third with 2 points.
The Nerazzurri will play for access to the round of 16 with River Plate on the night of Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26, at 3 a.m. Italian time at Lumen Field in Seattle. With a win, Inter are certain of passage to the round, but the Nerazzurri need only a draw.
L’Inter qualify for the round of 16 of the World Club Championship if:
– beats River Plate: with a win over the Argentines, the Nerazzurri would finish at the top of Group E with 7 points;
– draws or loses with River Plate provided Monterrey does not beat the Urawa Red Diamonds;
– draws with River Plate and Monterrey wins: this is where the avulse standings come into play with three teams tied on 5 points, which at the moment sees the Nerazzurri and Mexicans ahead due to the highest number of goals scored in direct clashes. With the 0-0 draw between Inter and River, Inter and Monterrey go through, with the 1-1 Inter and Monterrey-River duel, from 2-2 onward, Inter and River Plate.
