About halfway through the second half, the playout return match between Salernitana and Sampdoria was suspended at the Arechi Stadium with the Blucerchiati leading 2-0 after winning the first leg match by the same score.

Fans enraged by Salernitana’s impending relegation threw firecrackers, smoke bombs and all sorts of objects on the field, and referee Doveri was forced to suspend the match and send the teams to the locker room

After a goal by Ferrari annulled in the 35th minute with the help of VAR due to a hand foul by the Salernitana captain, Sampdoria had taken the lead in the 38th minute: Coda sent a right-footed shot into the low corner.

On 49′ the Blucerchiati doubled their lead: Christensen repelled a Coda shot just where there was Sibilli who slotted in the tap-in. At the end of the match it was sanctioned that Salernitana was defeated by forfeit, as well as on the field, thus returning to Serie C after ten years.
