Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon vs. Luca Nardi: the'incredible row

Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon will make his Wimbledon debut against Luca Nardi, an all-Italian challenge that will take place on London’s grass on Tuesday, July 1. Certainly not the first time against a compatriot for the San Candido champion, who to be precise will play on English soil his “derby” number 15 on the ATP circuit. The ’curious aspect of the affair, however, is that he has won the last 14. Which means that only in his very first match against another Italian tennis player has a defeat come.

One has to turn the hand of the clock back to August 2020, when it was Salvatore Caruso who beat him in a match that put qualification for the Cincinnati Masters 1000 at stake. Since then, as mentioned, only victories have come for Sinner in every circumstance that has seen him face another Italian tennis player.

The first ever came in Melbourne in 2021. Not at the Australian Open, however, but at an ATP 250 tournament.There Sinner got the better of Stefano Travaglia, no less, in the final. From that day on, an incredible streak began, one that has seen him to date not only reap only success: in the aforementioned 14 matches, in fact, the tennis player from San Candido has put up 31 sets won and just 5 surrendered to his opponent on the turn.

His most frequent victim turns out to be Lorenzo Sonego, beaten on no less than five occasions. Also worth mentioning then is his victory over Lorenzo Musetti in Antwerp in 2021 (a tournament later won by Sinner) and the one a year ago against Matteo Berrettini right at Wimbledon, after also beating the Roman in Toronto in 2023. Now the return to London, in the midst of an earthquake over the change of athletic trainer and physiotherapist, and another “derby”.
