Distraught Cristiano Ronaldo, who together with the departed Liverpool striker had just won the Nations League in a Portugal shirt: “It doesn“t make sense. I know you will always be with them. We will miss you”.
“Rest in peace brother” the words of the’other compatriot Rafael Leao. But the condolences are general and also cross the’ocean: “My prayers are with his loved ones at this difficult time. May they all be accompanied and protected” the message from Nba star LeBron James, Liverpool minority shareholder. “There must be a bigger reason but I cannot see it. I am very saddened”, the message from Jurgen Klopp, who as Liverpool coach brought Diogo Jota to the Reds in September 2020. Commotion in England, where Diogo Jota played: the Football Association and the Premier League said they were “devastated”: “Football has lost a champion who will be missed forever”. And at the ongoing Women’s European Championships in Switzerland, a minute’s silence will be observed before the whistle blows for the start of matches. “Only three weeks ago I had the honor of presenting a medal to Diogo Jota after the Nations League final: a moment of joy, pride and celebration that will now be forever etched in my memory with sorrow – said UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin -. It’s devastating to think that a life so full of joy and potential has been snatched from him too soon. Rest in peace, dear Diogo, you will not be forgotten”.
