Tragedy at Magny Cours, Borja Gomez dead: he was only 20 years old

A tremendous piece of news shook the world of sports and motorsports in particular on Thursday: Borja Gomez, a 20-year-old Spanish rider, died of the consequences of an accident during free practice in the Stock600 class of the FIM JuniorGP at Magny Cours. For the young man, despite immediate aid, there was nothing to be done.

“With enormous sorrow in our hearts, we confirm that Borja Gomez has died at the Magny-Cours circuit after a serious accident in the first free practice session of the European Stock Championship –reads a note from Team Laglisse, for which the Murcian raced in the championship reserved for young motorcycling hopefuls.

In addition to his exceptional talent as a rider, we will remember Borja as the wonderful person he was. His friendliness and his smile will be eternal. We will always carry him in our hearts”.

Immediate was the reaction of many other protagonists of international motorcycling, who expressed their sympathy through social networks: among them, in the minutes after Team Laglisse confirmed the news, also Max Biaggi, Tony Arbolino, Aprilia Racing, Albert Arenas, Jaume MasiĆ” and Raul Fernandez.

Borja Gomez was in his first season of the FIM Stock European Championship: he had taken second place in the first race, at Estoril, and success in the next one at Jerez. He arrived at Magny Cours leading the championship standings, with 45 points. In his career he had also raced some races in the Moto2 World Championship and others in the Supersport World Championship.
