When Lorenzo Sonego plays at Wimbledon: the precedent with Brandon Nakashima

Lorenzo Sonego is just one step away from equaling his best result at Wimbledon, reaching the round of 16 of the competition.

However, a high-level match will be needed for the Turin-based player to get the better of Brandon Nakashima and do as he did in 2021, when the Italian got past the third round before surrendering to the legendary Roger Federer.

The schedule for Saturday, July 5, calls for the match between Sonego and Nakashima to begin no earlier than 1:30 p.m. Italian time. The two will be engaged, unless otherwise arranged at the last moment, on Court 14: before them, at 12 noon, only one match, the doubles that will see the pairs Balaji/Reyes-Varela and Granollers/Zeballos facing each other on the London grass.

The doubles will be played on the London grass.

As far as precedent is concerned, Lorenzo Sonego has met only one’other time before Saturday Brandon Nakashima, again in 2025 at the Hong Kong tournament: the winner, in the round of 16, was the Turin-based player, who was able to win 7-6(4), 6-3 on concrete. Different conditions await him at Wimbledon, although the level of play in the previous two matches bodes well.

Sonego, in the first two rounds, won first against Portuguese Jaime Faria 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, and then against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (Lorenzo Musetti’s executioner) 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(4). Nakashima, on the other hand, defeated China&#8217s Bu Yunchaokete 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 in the first round and the’other U.S. Reilly Opelka 7-5, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3 in the second round.
