Taylor Fritz breaks his own taboo at Wimbledon

The first of four spots for the semifinals of Wimbledon 2025 is the preserve of Taylor Fritz. Indeed, the American, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, defeated Russian Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) in the quarterfinal played Tuesday afternoon in two hours and thirty-five minutes of play. For Fritz, it will be the first-ever semifinal in a Grand Slam tournament.
After winning the first two fractions with fair agility, Fritz had a difficult time in the third set, which saw Khachanov respond more effectively to the American’s shots and gradually regain confidence, eventually shortening the distance in the set count. The Russian also started the fourth set with a break lead, giving the impression that he could complete the comeback.
Fritz, however, recovered the break disadvantage in the fourth game, rebalancing a set that no longer had a master until 6-6. In the tie-break, the’current No. 5 in the ATP rankings immediately took a 2-0 mini-break lead and never looked back: the first match point was the good one to achieve a historic milestone on a personal level.
Fritz, however, did not look back.
Before today, in fact, Taylor Fritz had never gone beyond the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam tournament: at Wimbledon 2022 he had surrendered to Rafa Nadal, at the US Open 2023 he had lost to Novak Djokovic while in 2024 he had reached the quarters at the Australian Open and again at Wimbledon, losing to Djokovic himself and Lorenzo Musetti, respectively.
