Wimbledon, Belinda Bencic challenges Iga Swiatek in semifinals

Swiss Belinda Bencic, world number 35, never in the quarterfinals before this year at the Championships, won her first semifinal match in the Wimbledon women’s singles by beating Russian Mirra Andreeva, number 7, in two sets that ended in a tie-break.

No break points conceded by either player until the 11th game of the first set, when it was the 28-year-old from Canton St. Gallen who saved two, and then, from 3-2 in her favor without a minibreak, went on to win the tie-break 7-3.

The 18-year-old from Moscow saves two break points at 1-1, Belinda cancels one in the eighth game. It was Mirra, at 4-4, who first lost her serve, but she immediately regained it. Another tie-break, in which Andreeva loses all the points played on her serve. Instead, Bencic loses two of four and also wins the second tie-break, this time 7-2.

Two hours and eight minutes the duration of the match. In the semifinals, the Swiss, who was No. 4 in 2020 and is the second from her country after Martina Hingis to finish in the top four on London’s grass, will take on Polish former tennis queen Iga Swiatek.
