Giro Women, Lorena Wiebes wins stage 5

The stage with the lowest elevation gain of the Giro d’Italia Women 2025 unexpectedly causes several changes in the general classification. With 53 km to go on the Mirano-Monselice finish, the combined forcing of Team SD Worx – Protime and UAE Team ADQ, broke the Maglia Rosa group. Staying in front were Marlen Reusser, Elisa Longo Borghini and Anna Van der Breggen, who were adept at taking advantage of the situation.

The action also favored Lorena Wiebes, the day’s big favorite, who did not disappoint expectations: launched by world champion Lotte Kopecky, she ruled compatriot Marianne Vos in the sprint, taking her 14th win of the season and consolidating her lead in the annual victories list.

The chasing group, which included Sarah Gigante, Antonia Niedermaier and Pauliena Rooijakkers, among others, crossed the finish line 1’42” behind, allowing Anna Van der Breggen and Katrine Aalerud to move up to third and fourth place in the overall standings, respectively.

“The team was outstanding today. Together with UAE we were able to open a wide margin on the rest of the group, and all that was left was for me to complete the job. Barbara Guarischi and Lotte Kopecky did an amazing job in the’last km– said Wiebes after the finish -It was also a good day for Anna van der Breggen, who is now third in the overall standings. We are looking forward to the next stages”.

“I didn&#8220t expect it to go like this today, however at the end of the day it was better than expected – added Reusser -. I don&#8217t like these stages very much, they are nervous and there&#8217s a lot of tension, so instead we approached the finale with less stress. To have such a supportive team is beautiful, I feel the support not only from the athletes but also from the staff, it is really special for me. From the next few days I expect that whoever wants to win will have to attack me, because Elisa Longo Borghini and I have a good advantage over the others, who will have to try from afar”.
