Italy defeated by Spain but in the quarterfinals of the'European after 12 years
Mission accomplished for women’s Italy, which after 12 years is back in the quarterfinals of a European Championship. The defeat in Bern to Spain did not cost them dearly, also because Portugal in the end even lost 2-1 to Belgium, missing out on hooking up on 4 points (but would still have been out even if they had won on goal difference).
In the first half the Azzurre, who would have been satisfied with a draw or even a defeat without conceding too many goals, even took the lead with Oliviero.
The dreams of first place, however, were immediately downsized by Athenea, author of the’immediate equalizer. Patri and Gonzalez in the second half signed victory and Spain’s lead.
Italy, however, more than satisfied with second place, will face Norway, the winner of group A, in the quarterfinals: the challenge will be staged on Wednesday, July 16, at 9 p.m.
