Billie Jean King Cup, Tathiana Garbin plays it safe: the conveners

Ahead of the Billie Jean King Cup commitments in September, with defending champion Italy playing its quarterfinal against China, captain Tathiana Garbin has summoned four athletes, reserving a period of further reflection before making official the fifth name that will represent Italy in Shenzhen.

In fact, there are no big surprises among the four selected: leading the Italian troop will be Jasmine Paolini, current No. 9 in the WTA ranking, with Sara Errani a key wild card for matches played in doubles (where, at ranking level, she is No. 6 with Paolini herself); Lucia Bronzetti (No. 70 WTA) and Elisabetta Cocciaretto (No. 77), respectively the second and third best Italian in the world rankings, complete the picture while waiting for the last name. The’list is non-binding and may be modified close to the BJK Cup Finals.

“The Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen–is getting closer and closer; Garbin commented to ‘Supertennis’ -After last year’s wonderful success, we are looking forward to returning to the court to defend the title, with the same passion, tenacity and attachment to the blue jersey that have always distinguished us”.

“We know that the task will not be easy: we will need maximum concentration from the very first commitment, against a host and absolutely fearsome China. As for the convocations, they will be supplemented or modified according to what the field will say. There are still almost two months to go and the picture could evolve, as always happens in our sport”.

“However, one thing is certain: regardless of who will take the field, I know that the commitment will be as always maximum. Mine is a compact team, made up of extraordinary girls and athletes, where the concept of individual naturally comes after that of group” concluded the non-playing captain of the blue team.
