Gianmarco Pozzecco extols Italbasket and Simone Fontecchio, but is self-critical
L’Italbasket gave itself a memorable 96-73 in the game played at the European Championships against Bosnia, signing its second success at EuroBasket 2025. On the shields a record-breaking Simone Fontecchio, with 39 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists to his credit: that is how coach Gianmarco Pozzecco decided to exalt his champion, on a night when it also fell to him to be self-critical for his ejection.
“I complicated their lives – Pozzecco admitted at the end of the game -But these guys, for the umpteenth time, did something extraordinary. Personally then I always like to take responsibility, but I have to be honest. I have a feeling that the second technical tonight was a little bit’exaggerated”.
From Pozzecco also comes high praise for Fontecchio, combined with a defense of a player who had ended up in someone’s crosshairs for his dull debut at EuroBasket 2025. “Players like Simone feel so much the first game of a competition like this that it can happen to miss. But with that kind of ardor and attachment to the Italy jersey, then come games like tonight”” noted the Italy coach.
But in general, there are many protagonists of the national team that swept Bosnia. And Pozzecco wanted to extol them all: “I am proud of Casalone, Fucà, Lotesoriere, Poeta, Fois. Also of Billy Donovan Jr, who gave us a hand this summer. I am resoundingly happy, because every day these guys give much more of their best”.
