Jonas Vingegaard won the ninth stage of the Vuelta, Alfaro-Estación de esquí de Valdezcaray of 195.5 kilometers, with an altitude finish.

The Danish winner of two Tour de France stages placed the decisive spurt eleven kilometers from the finish, when only Giulio Ciccone was able to hold his wheel.

The Italian, however, could not resist a second spurt by the Dane, who eventually won by a 24″ gap over mountain bike Olympian Tom Pidcock, second, and Portuguese Joao Almeida, third. Ciccone eventually placed seventh, 1’46” from Vingegaard.

Norwegian Torstein Traeen retained the red leader’s jersey but his lead over Vingegaard, who is now second, has narrowed and is 37″. In third place is Almeida at 1’15”. Ciccone is sixth at 2’42”.
