Last chance for Ferrari: win Monza to save the season

The Dutch GP was a real nightmare for Ferrari. Both single-seaters retired and yet another missed opportunity to try to give some satisfaction to their fans. What was supposed to be a season of success, to date, is a’year to forget. Lewis Hamilton has no feeling for the Red and Charles Leclerc seems to have run out of miracles. However, over the weekend, it is raced in Monza, the home GP for Ferrari.

After 15 GPs, Ferrari has yet to win. True, McLaren’s dominance is total, but both Red Bull, thanks to Max Verstappen, and Mercedes (with George Russell), have taken away the satisfaction of taking home at least one win (two for the reigning World Champion). The Cavallino’s success is missing from the roll call.

The memory, of course, goes back to last year with Charles Leclerc’s stunning victory in front of an enthusiastic red tide. The Monegasque also won in 2019. Let’s say a trio would make him happy in a season where he is increasingly pulled in the face.

Then there is Lewis Hamilton, who is having the worst season of his career (his words). An exploit, perhaps right in Monza, could unlock him for good. Just to be clear. The seven-time World Champion has won the Italian GP five times (the last in 2018). Only one other driver has done so much, namely Michael Schumacher. Ferrari, at Monza, has won 20 times. Winning this year would have a special flavor. It would mean saving the season.
