Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s No. 1 tennis player, talked about how she came to be, overcoming many psychological problems that plagued her early in her career, to become the undisputed queen of the WTA circuit. Here are the words of the 27-year-old from Minsk in Jay Shetty’s YouTube podcast.

“I worked with a sports psychologist for four or five years in the first part of my career. We did a lot of things, but I realized that I was too dependent on her. I expected her to solve my problems, and I kept repeating the same mistake”.

“This made me angry and at some point I said to myself, ‘Okay, I have to take responsibility for my actions.’ There I stopped working with the psychologist and that was the moment I started to know myself, I realized who I was.”

“I started to control my emotions much better and felt more balanced, taking responsibility. Being able to fight and manage my emotions like I did in the Flushing Meadows final means a lot to me. I am proud of myself.”
