Cantù collapses in finale with Venice: but Nicola Brienza sees positive

Reyer Venezia beats a good Acqua S.Bernardo Cantù 103-80, capable of holding its own against the orogranata for half the game except falling in the final. The Brianzoli, it must be said, were fresh from the challenge 24 hours earlier against Virtus Bologna. And indeed, the words of Nicola Brienza are of great support for his team.
The first half of the opening quarter flows in’balance, with Basile and Sneed on the shields. Venice makes the most of some of the white-blacks’ laxity and finds the first stretch propelled by Cole and Valentine. The first period ends with the hosts ahead 24-17. Reyer continues its positive momentum and stretches to +10. Moraschini shakes up Acqua S.Bernardo’Acqua S.Bernardo. Cantù reacts and with a great partial, orchestrated by Gilyard, even manages to go ahead by two lengths. In the last possessions Venice responds and regains the lead in the game. Thus we go to the locker room on 43-41.
.
In the second half Venice looks shinier and fresher and immediately stretches decisively. Cantù struggles to find the basket and the Venetians’ lead returns to double digits. Venice gets to a maximum lead of 14 lengths, then it is Gilyard in the final to bring closer a’Acqua S.Bernardo that is down 75-63 at the end of the third quarter. There was little energy left in Cantù’s tank and Venice immediately secured the win, stretching to +20. With the result on ice, the last few minutes flowed without jolts and the hosts imposed themselves with the final score of 103-80.
“We had a high-level weekend, playing against two teams that will play an important role in the league during the season – commented Coach Brienza at the end of the game. “We were faced with a physicality and fluidity of play that we were not used to. There were positive things and some negative things, daughters of the learning path we are on”.
“In the first half we were already quite out of breath, but we managed to have good control over what we had to do on the court. Then in the second the energy almost vanished and everything was much more difficult. This two days has put us in front of what the level of Serie A is and so it will give us a lot of cues to work on starting next week”, added Brienza.
