Achille Polonara reassures everyone after bone marrow transplant

“Transplant: everything ok”. With these simple but important words, Achille Polonara wanted to reassure all his followers on social media, and insiders more generally, after the bone marrow transplant he underwent on Thursday at Sant’Orsola Hospital in Bologna. The 33-year-old basketball player will remain in the hospital in the coming days to keep the situation monitored.
Polonara’s goal is to return to a basketball court as soon as possible, after the extrasportive battles he has had to face in the last two years: waiting for him is Dinamo Sassari, a club that decided to sign him six years after the conclusion of his first adventure in Sardinia, which lasted from 2017 to 2019.
The marrow transplant had become necessary, along with a new round of chemotherapy, to treat a form of myeloid leukemia diagnosed last June (a little less than two years after the diagnosis of uan testicular neoplasm, cured in the fall of 2023): the disease had also forced Polonara to a hospitalization in Spain, in Valencia, in a center specializing in the treatment of myeloid leukemia also through an experimental therapy.
The team has decided to sign him in Sardinia, as the club has decided to sign him six years after his first adventure in Sardinia, which lasted from 2017 to 2019.
As Polonara himself told the ‘Corriere di Bologna’, the bone marrow donor is an American girl who is 90 percent compatible: “I was lucky, there were two donors who were 90 percent compatible, also a German guy, but they opted for her because they were able to get in touch right away” the basketball player had explained to the Bologna-based newspaper.
