He didn’t have time to return from the World Paralympic Athletics Championships, with the two gold medals won in India hanging around his neck, that already on Saturday Colonel of the Honor Roll Carlo Calcagni, a victim of Duty, wounded and maimed for service, received a prestigious award named after judges Rosario Livatino, Antonino Saetta and Giuseppe Costa, symbols of justice, courage and integrity.

“Receiving an award named after Livatino, Saetta and Costa takes on a deep and personal meaning for me – Calcagni declares. It means that my life, marked by service, sacrifice and challenges that would have bent anyone, can become a testimony. It means that the pain, suffering and injustices suffered can turn into a beacon for those who struggle every day, without giving up dignity and respect for themselves and others. It is an award that spurs me to continue, to live with courage and to show that the true value of a man is measured in the way he faces what seems impossible”.

The official motivation for the award, moreover, highlights the extraordinary path of Calcagni, who received the precious recognition “For serving Italy as a pilot officer, helicopter instructor and Folgore paratrooper, distinguishing himself in international peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the UN; for the courage with which he faced the severe consequences of an illness that arose after service in Bosnia-Herzegovina, transforming suffering into a testimony of resilience and rebirth; for the sporting successes he achieved as a Paralympic world champion, which carried Italy&#8221s name high, in keeping with the values embodied by Judges Livatino, Saetta and Costa”.

The award was presented at the hands of Hon. Carla Giuliano, a member of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Illegal Activities Related to the Waste Cycle, who pointed out that Calcagni represents a concrete model of dedication and courage.
