Jannik Sinner, Filippo Volandri won’t stand for it: "This way you can’t play"

Extreme heat at the Shanghai Masters 1000 put a strain on the physical condition of many tennis players, including Jannik Sinner. The world number two was forced to raise the white flag due to cramping in the third set of his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor.
Filippo Volandri, host of Tennis Talk on SuperTennis, spoke this way after the Azzurro’s withdrawal: “Against Daniel Altmaier he closed the match in time. With Tallon Griekspoor he had the opportunity to close it in two and then have a day of rest and see. Obviously that was the condition, the rest day can only make you better accustomed to certain situations”.
“We talked about the many retreats – he added -Almost in every match that exceeds two hours, the doctor comes in to measure the pressure because the player feels sick. It is an extraordinary year where there are high temperatures, but this way you cannot play. In China they could, for example, make an indoor circuit. So many players might give up next year”.
After the’alarm raised by Sinner and co, the ATP is working to find a solution to the heat problem since it’s not only in Shanghai that sicknesses have been reported. The ‘heat rule’ is being considered: a rule could be included whereby an ATP supervisor, in consultation with a medical team and local authorities, can decide to suspend a match when certain conditions occur.
