With his victory at the ATP 500 in Vienna, Jannik Sinner took the first step in the difficult feat of ending 2025 at the top of the world ranking. The Austrian success allowed him to make up 500 points on Carlos Alcaraz, who was stationary after the Tokyo trip, reducing the gap between the two to less than a thousand points.

Currently Sinner has risen to 10,500 points, compared to the Spaniard’s 11,340: in Monday’s updated standings, the margin between the two will thus be 840 points. Both will return to the court this week in the Paris Masters 1000, scheduled at the new Nanterre venue, where Alcaraz will have to defend his 100 points from the 2024 round of 16 – points he will lose in the Nov. 3 ranking. Considering the “live” ranking, the Spaniard’s lead shrinks to 740 points.

To take back the number one spot as early as the end of the French tournament, Sinner will have to win his first Masters 1000 of the season, bringing himself to 11,500 points, and hope that Alcaraz does not go beyond the quarterfinals (in which case the Spaniard would rise to 11,440). In all other scenarios, the Italian will have to postpone the assault.

Even in the event of overtaking, however, Sinner’s lead would last only a week: on Nov. 10, in fact, the 2024 ATP Finals points will be subtracted – 1,500 for Jannik and 200 for Alcaraz. Nevertheless, the fight for who will end the season at the top remains open and uncertain to the last.
