Benson Kipruto wins the New York City Marathon in a sprint.

In a sprint finish Kenyan Benson Kipruto won the 54th New York City Marathon in 2 hours 8 minutes 9 seconds. Immediately behind him was compatriot Alexander Mutiso Munyao, winner of London 2024, who gave him a hard time until the’last kilometer in Central Park.
Kipruto, who has wins in Tokyo, Chicago and Boston in his palmares, beat Munayo by 16 hundredths of a second. Out of the running was star Eliud Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion marathoner who ended his career in New York. Daniele Meucci finished 11th. The Italian crossed the finish line in Central Park in 2 hours 10 minutes and 40 seconds.
Kenyan Hellen Obiri won the women’s race for the second time in 2 hours 19 minutes 51 seconds. A 35-year-old former middle distance runner, Obiri had already triumphed in the Big Apple in 2023. Today she pulverized Margaret Okayo’s previous record in a New York City marathon of 2 hours 22 minutes and 31 seconds, which had been unbeaten for 22 years.
