Arne Slot’s position on the Liverpool bench has become decidedly at risk. In the last league round the Reds were defeated at home by Nottingham Forest, to the delight of its volcanic owner Evangelos Marinakis, and occupy the 11th position in the Premier League standings.

Names of the Dutchman’s possible replacements are beginning to circulate: they range from the rampant Andoni Iraola, now at Bournemouth, to another Spaniard, Xabi Alonso, whose adventure at Real Madrid is not without hiccups, via Crystal Palace’s Austrian helmsman Oliver Glasner.

The English club would also be looking in Italy: teasing the idea of signing Cesc Fabregas, who is in charge of Como and who on Monday celebrated the Larians’ bombastic success on the field of Torino in one of the two postponements of the twelfth day of the top division.

Slot, born in 1978 and former coach of Cambuur, Az Alkmaar and Feyenoord will play part of his own future on Wednesday night at Anfield in the Champions League against a Dutch side, Psv Eindhoven.
