In Paris Nicola Pietrangeli achieved his greatest triumphs, winning Roland Garros twice. The tournament’s organization wanted to pay tribute to the Blue on the day of his death at age 92. “Nicola Pietrangeli passed away at the age of 92. A four-time Roland-Garros champion and an iconic figure in Italian tennis, he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. He will be greatly missed by the tennis world”.

Also remembering Pietrangeli is the official account of the Internazionali di Roma, which he won twice: “It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Nicola Pietrangeli, a true legend of Italian tennis and two-time champion of Rome (1957, 1961). His legacy will live forever in the history of our sport, in the memory of our tournament and in the stadium that proudly bears his name. Hello, Nicola”.

Pietrangeli won a total of 67 career titles in singles and doubles. The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) has ordered a minute’s silence at all competitions scheduled from today and for the entire weekend to honor his memory.

“It is difficult to know how to combine the greatness of the sportsman with the simplicity of the man, in some ways a revolutionary who wrote the history of Italian tennis, here Nicola was just that, but above all he leaves us a friend, a straightforward person who fought intensely and who gives us an immense legacy, not only sporting, but cultural and value-based. I am sure that his example will live on in our memories and in the future of sports” wrote Sports Minister Andrea Abodi.
