The winter sports world celebrated, on Tuesday, December 2, Dorothea Wierer’s return to victory in the Biathlon World Cup, where she had not climbed to the top step of the podium since March 2023: the Italian champion triumphed in fact in the women’s 15 km in Östersund, Sweden (a place, by the way, where she had achieved both her first CdM success in 2015 and her last before today). The financier from Anterselva virtually sprinted ahead of Finland&#8217s Sonja Leinamo, while third place went to France&#8217s Camille Bened, who paid dearly for a mistake at the last polygon by finishing 8″4 from the winner.

Good return to the Biathlon World Cup circuit for Lisa Vittozzi, who was able to finish in tenth place despite three errors at the polygon, closing at 1’02″8 from Dorothea Wierer: the two, together, had contributed to Italy&#8217s second place in the first CdM seasonal race, the relay run also in Östersund last Saturday, together with Michela Carrara and Hannah Auchentaller. The latter, in the 15 km, instead finished 22nd and 61st respectively, both with five errors at the polygon. Six, on the other hand, were the penalties for Samuela Comola, who finished in seventy-eighth place.

Today’s victory is Dorothea Wierer’s 19th success in the Biathlon World Cup, fourteenth at the individual level in addition to five in the relay. As many as six of these successes have come in Östersund: the first overall victory on December 3, 2015 (also in the individual race), the mixed relay on November 30, 2019 (together with Lisa Vittozzi, Dominik Windisch and Lukas Hofer), the sprint on December 1, 2019, the individual on March 9, 2023, and the mass start run a few days later on March 12. Wierer, in her brilliant career, has won the overall twice (2019, 2020), the pursuit cup in 2019, the individual cup in 2016 and 2021 and the mass start in 2020.

In the Östersund 15-kilometer race won Tuesday, Dorothea Wierer achieved her 68th career podium finish, including those from World Championships and Olympic Games valid for the World Cup standings.
