New adventure in Finland for Alfie Cicale, midfielder son of an Italian and an Englishman who opted for British nationality. Coming from Vaasa VPS, he has signed a two-year contract, with an option for a third season, with HJK Helsinki. “I am really excited. HJK is the biggest, most prestigious and historically most important club in Finland” said the 23-year-old, who did not hide all the happiness due to the jump in quality. Cicale has played 41 games in Veikkausliiga – the Scandinavian country’s top league – with the VPS jersey starting in the 2024 season.

“I am a creative player. I like to jump man in one-on-one duels and play fun football” added the youngster, who is often deployed as an outfielder. Then, prodded by the press office of his new club, he recalled the matches in which he took the field against future teammates. “It is always challenging to face the best players in the league. At the same time it is also the most beautiful thing – he was keen to emphasize -: on the other hand, it is precisely the matches you wait for the most. There is a lot of responsibility, but I love challenges and I think I have provided good performances in those matches”.

Cicale’s career is definitely out of the ordinary. He grew up in the Norwich academy, while studying in England he graduated from Oxford University with excellent grades, and already had one foot inside a local law firm. The call of the field, however, was stronger and prompted him to seek a level team away from home as well. After a few trial periods, he arrived at VPS before the 2024 season. “We expect that he will continue to grow in the new environment, so that this will also be reflected in his goal and assist statistics” HJK sports director Petri Vuorinen concluded.
