Champions League: Conegliano to quarterfinals, Milan forced into playoffs

Numia Vero Volley Milano

The last day of the group stage of the women&#8217s CEV Champions League leaves some regrets for the Italian teams. In particular, as far as Savino del Bene Scandicci and Numia Vero Volley Milano are concerned, who came close to pulling off the feat with VakifBank Istanbul and Eczacibasi Istanbul, respectively. It was all easy, however, for Prosecco Doc A.Carraro Imoco Conegliano with LKS Lodz, nice win also for Igor Gorgonzola Novara against Sport Lisboa e Benfica.

Luca GiorgettiPaola Egonu, very painful mockery. Now it gets really tough: photos

A tie-break defeat for Numia Vero Volley Milan against Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul, which at the Allianz Cloud closes Pool C of the Champions League in first place.
In front of over 5,000 spectators, the Milanese finished second.

They will then have to go through the playoffs to gain access to the quarterfinals.

L'Olympiacos is not an unbeatable opponent but in the quarters there could be a very tough confrontation with VakifBank.

Convincing start for the Consortium team, which starts with great intensity and takes advantage of the initial difficulties of the Turks.
Karakurt dry of points in the first partial.
In the second set, however, the inertia of the match changes.

The Turkish opposite climbs up the ranks and, along with former Magdalena Stysiak and Dana Rettke, leads the Eczacibasi comeback, which overturns the score and puts Milan with its back to the wall.
Vero Volleyball does not give up and, as happened in the first match in Turkey, finds the resources to extend the challenge to the tie-break, showing character and solidity.
In the decisive set Milan escaped up to 7-3, but suffered the return of the guests, able to lead 10-12.
Karakurt decisive first with a powerful pipe against the wall at three, then repelling in the court an attack of Paola Egonu.
The Milanese captain reacts immediately by signing the equalizer with two lobs of great lucidity, but in the final Eczacibasi is more cynical.
Egonu is bricked again and, on the first match point, it is Karakurt again to close the match, giving the success to the Turks.

Savino Del Bene Scandicci surrendered only in the fifth set to VakifBank Istanbul. Vakifbank Spor Sarayi’s result (24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-12) did not allow the Tuscans to overtake the Turks in the standings.Coach Gaspari’s team thus finished in second place in Pool A of the CEV Champions League. A 3-0 or 3-1 victory (with the lost set no higher than 20) would have been needed to clinch the top spot, a goal only narrowly missed. Scandicci will now have to play the additional round of the playoffs in which it will face Igor Gorgonzola Novara in an Italian derby.

Igor Gorgonzola Novara strolls through in the’last day of Pool B of the CEV Champions League. In front of the home crowd, the Piedmontese team rifled a clear 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-15) win over Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Coach Bernardi’s Mosquitoes finished second in their group and, as mentioned, will challenge Savino Del Bene Scandicci in an all-Italian derby in the playoffs, with first leg scheduled for Feb. 17-19 in Novara and return in Florence a week later (Feb. 24-26).

Numberia Vero Volley Milan also failed, which, in front of the friendly walls of the Allianz Cloud, surrendered its direct clash to the Turks of Eczacibasi Istanbul (25-20, 18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 13-15) in the fifth set, giving its opponents the top spot in Pool C due to a better set quotient: 2.4 vs. 2.3, tied on points, 14. The meneghine will therefore be forced to play in the playoffs, where they will face the Greeks of Olympiacos, already beaten twice in the group.

Finally, no problem for Prosecco Doc A.Carraro Imoco Conegliano at Palaverde in Villorba. The defending champions overcome with a dry 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-12) accrued in just over an hour against LKS Lodz and fly directly to the quarterfinals of the CEV Champions League. The panthers will find in the next round the winner between Germany’s Schwerin and Turkey’s Zeren Ankara, already faced in the rounds and beaten in both the first leg and the return.
